Making his move

Daniel Stephenson (9), of Dunedin, takes part in the Otago/Southland under-13 chess championship at the Otago Chess Club in Dunedin at the weekend.

Otago Chess Club junior development officer Quentin Johnson said 37 entries were received for the annual competition, held at its Maitland St clubrooms on Saturday.

Most competitors were from Dunedin, but a few had come from as far away as Queenstown, Central Otago and Gore, he said.

The youngest player was just 8 years old, he said.
