Man accused of stealing ambulance in court

A man who allegedly stole an ambulance from South Dunedin and had to be stopped with road spikes has been granted bail.

Clayton Tamakehu (30) appeared before the Dunedin District Court this morning charged with driving while forbidden, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving and dishonestly taking a vehicle belonging to St John.

According to court documents, the ambulance was worth $220,000.

He was granted bail to live at a South Dunedin address between 7pm and 7am and ordered not to drive.

Tamakehu was also not allowed to consume alcohol or drugs.

Police said the ambulance was taken from South Dunedin about 11pm yesterday.

They tracked it using its GPS and the vehicle was stopped in Waihola using road spikes.

It did not crash and no one was hurt, police said.

Tamakehu will be back in court again in three weeks.
