Armed offenders squad members attended a house in the Dunedin suburb of Wakari yesterday after an incident in which a 38-year-old man allegedly confronted two police officers with a knife just before noon.

The two officers beat a hasty retreat.

Detective Sergeant Chris Henderson, of Dunedin, said the two officers were executing a search warrant at a Rosebank Ave address when they were confronted by the man, whowas carrying a knife.

They left and the armed offenders squad (AOS) was called.

The man was taken into custody just after noon.

He has been charged with possessing an offensive weapon and will appear in the Dunedin District Court.

Several streets were cordoned off during the incident.
