Man caught stealing lingerie from houses

A 22-year-old man, caught with lingerie near the University of Otago early yesterday, has been charged with burglary.

Campus Watch staff observed the man entering properties in Castle and Leith Sts, and later found him hiding behind a fence at the former Gardens Tavern shortly after 6am, Acting Senior Sergeant Chris McLellan said.

Police found the man in possession of nine items of female underwear and a silver camera, he said.

The man admitted to removing the items from three properties around the area, and police were working to reunite the bras and panties of "all shapes and sizes" with their rightful owners, he said.

Police were investigating whether the incident was a one-off and anyone in the area who had items stolen from their clotheslines should contact Dunedin Police.

Snr Sgt McLellan praised the work of the Campus Watch staff, who spotted the man acting suspiciously and called police.

The employed man, who lives in North Dunedin, will appear in the Dunedin District Court this week on burglary charges.
