A 23-year-old Dunedin man has denied murdering a woman at her home in the city earlier this month.
The man appeared briefly at a hearing in the High Court at Dunedin yesterday.
Defence counsel John Westgate told Justice Cameron Mander he had been instructed to enter pleas of not guilty to both charges, one of murdering a woman and one of wounding a man with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Mr Westgate asked for the man to be remanded in custody to September 22 for a case review hearing.
He also asked for the interim name suppression order to continue. And he said the defendant would be assessed by a psychiatrist well before the date of the case review hearing.
Depending on the outcome of that assessment, the Crown might want to have a psychiatric examination of its own, Crown prosecutor Robin Bates said.
Justice Cameron Mander remanded the man in custody until September 22 but said he was concerned about continuing the interim name suppression.
But, given the man was to see a psychiatrist soon, the judge agreed to continue suppression until August 26.
He told Mr Westgate a formal application with supporting affidavits would have to be filed for the order to be continued, otherwise it would lapse on August 26.
