An elderly man has been taken to Dunedin Hospital after driving off Portobello Rd this morning.

A firefighter at the scene said it appeared the man suffered a medical event before crashing off the road on to rocks after 10am.

The man was seen being taken away by St John ambulance after he was extracted from his car by firefighters.

His dog was taken to a nearby vet after suffering injuries in the crash.
