Dunedin resident Jessica de Heij gathered her fellow Dutch expats for an Orange Bike Ride around the city in celebration of King’s Day — a national holiday in the Netherlands marking King Willem-Alexander’s birthday.
The cyclists rode along the Otago Harbour Cycle Loop from the Dunedin Railway Station to Port Chalmers where they met at the Portsider to chat and enjoy the Dutch snack bitterballen.
Ms de Heij said back in the Netherlands the King’s Birthday involved lots of activities including concerts, street parties and people dressed in orange in boats along canals.
"Events like this highlight how bicycles are practical transportation tools, just like cars, but with the added benefits of zero emissions and contributing to climate resilience."
Ms de Heij hoped to see the bike ride grow with more people taking part in the future. — APL
