Dunedin's Rattray St is about to get some much needed love, when Australian street artist Fintan Magee starts work on a ''massive'' mural there next week.

Magee will be the latest international street artist to be brought to the city by the Dunedin Street Art group.

Group spokesman Glen Hazelton said Magee's three to four-storey-high work was the first of three projects it was planning for Rattray St.

''[We are] trying to improve the amenity down there, given it has been looking pretty dire over the last couple of years.''

Magee was known for his ''quite realistic'' street art.

''He does stuff that is really quite life-like and has a lot of colour to it.''

The second project was a ''changing wall'', which would be replaced with a new mural every three to four months.

''That will be an opportunity for a different range of artists to showcase their work and particularly for young up-and-coming artists.''

The third project for the street was a collaboration between Dunedin Street Art and artist's co-operative Stickum, which painted a mural in Caversham last year.
