Mayor to patrol with police

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull will get a taste of Dunedin nightlife this weekend, when he and two councillors accompany police on patrols after midnight tonight.

Mr Cull said police regularly offered councillors the opportunity to tag along. He had agreed, as had councillors Jinty MacTavish and Colin Weatherall.

Mr Cull has spoken out on the issue of violence on city streets this year, especially in February, when four police officers ended up in hospital after a weekend of disorder.

"It would be a bit hypocritical for me to be mouthing off about the issue, and then not go." Mr Cull said he wanted to see for himself the reality of the situation.
