Temperatures in the city were blistering on and off the track yesterday, with the mercury reaching 31.7degC at Dunedin International Airport about noon, according to the MetService.

The temperature in the Octagon reached 28.7degC about noon, although temperatures dropped swiftly as the wind turned southwest, settling at 19degC about 2pm.

Other parts of Otago reached their highs later, with Oamaru hitting 28.6degC, Alexandra 31.2degC and Wanaka 28.5degC, about 4pm.

Balclutha reached 27degC at noon, while Queenstown's high for the day was 26degC.

MetService meteorologist John Law said the good weather was expected to hang around Dunedin all weekend, with temperatures in the mid-20s forecast until a cool southwest change rolled in on Monday.
