A painting contractor who has died after falling from scaffolding in Dunedin on Monday was an "outstanding man", his employer said last night.
Willie Toa (58), of Mosgiel, who was married with children, died on Tuesday, after falling about 3m while working at Arthur Street School.
He had been a contractor with Dunedin company Mulford Holdings for many years, managing director Barrie Clydesdale said last night.
"We are all devastated at the loss of an outstanding man and a valued colleague . . . It is an absolutely tragic loss."
Mr Toa's fall is being investigated by the Department of Labour.
Otago work places services manager Mark Murray said it would probably be two months before the investigation was completed.
"We understand this is a very difficult time for his family, friends and work colleagues. Our hearts go out to them."
