The Dunedin City Council is promising a fresh new look - but not necessarily a breath of fresh air - inside Dunedin's refurbished Municipal Lane toilet.
The public restroom reopened yesterday after being closed for nine weeks while the council's contractors completed a $65,000 refurbishment of the facility.
Council city property assistant manager Rhonda Abercrombie said the redecoration including new lighting, floor tiles, coverings and a new colour scheme.
New luggage storage areas had also been added, and individual toilet fittings replaced where needed, although most were in good condition, she said.
Council staff had decided to "take the opportunity" to upgrade the restroom when it was to be closed anyway, she said.
The closure was needed to allow work to proceed inside the restroom's ceiling - installing new fire and electrical systems - as part of the wider Dunedin Centre upgrade, she said.
The estimated cost would be covered by a cost-sharing arrangement between city property and the budget for the Dunedin Centre upgrade, she said.
