Concerned about the number of Chinese people becoming Dunedin residents without knowing anything about their new home, Kevin Zhang has begun showing them what the Southern city has to offer.

The real estate agent had been a New Zealand resident for several decades and previously worked as a tour guide on the Otago Peninsula.

Mr Zhang provides activities such as English language training and tours of the peninsula's wildlife attractions.

"I feel the need for Chinese people in Dunedin to know the city," he said.

He recently launched a series of Otago Harbour tours on the Monarch.

The first of four tours organised for this month was held on Saturday, and Mr Zhang hoped they would promote many of the city's tourist sites in one trip.

"If anything, it is a good opportunity for them to practise their English-speaking skills."
