Nature documentary Primeval New Zealand, produced by Dunedin-based television company NHNZ, has won three awards at an international wildlife film festival.

Programme executive producer Judith Curran was excited about the awards from the International Wildlife Film Festival in Missoula, Montana.

"It's a very prestigious festival. We're up against the best producers in the world like the BBC."

The programme, which aired on TV One in January, won awards for best graphic animation for work created by Weta Productions, best television programme under $250,000 and best scientific content.

Ms Curran said the award for best scientific content was very special given the challenges of making the "incredibly complex" story about the origins of New Zealand's wildlife accessible and entertaining while still including the science.

The documentary's success was also shown in the good ratings TV One got for it and the channel's programming of it after its airing of David Attenborough's Frozen Planet, she said.

It was also special to her as it was her first show made and aired locally.

NHNZ had also been named in Realscreen's (an international magazine dedicated to non-fiction film and television industries) 100 top non-fiction production companies, she said.

"It's very exciting."
