No hard felines, Gareth, it's how I felt

Divisive politician Gareth Morgan has been stitched up for his anti-cat policies by a Kingston artist who embroidered his portrait on to cat fur.

Amy Baker insists there are no bald felines wandering around Lake Wakatipu and her two Birman cats Monty and Oscar were ''very willing'' to have their hair brushed off to contribute.

''One of them meows when he hasn't been brushed.''

The work, Gareth Morgan on Cats, was on display at the week-long Stitching New Zealand exhibition at the HD Skinner Annex at Otago Museum yesterday.

Ms Baker said the work was very ''tongue-in-cheek''.

''I certainly wouldn't say I hated him, and I do agree with some of his policies. I hope he would get a laugh out of it.''

The politician tried to launch a campaign to exterminate some cats as a native-bird saving effort.

Comments he made about cats were ''quite sensationalist'', Ms Baker said.

To create the piece she hand-felted cat fur and stitched his portrait on top with regular thread.

It is not the first time Ms Baker has stitched a divisive figure. In September she created a portrait of Donald Trump using both cat and human hair.

''I used my own because I needed long strands.

''There's actually a long history of people using hair in embroidery, but in modern society it tends to make people squirm, which is why I thought with Trump it added to his 'ick' factor.

''There's a bit of fun to be had with these figures. I would do a lot of reading about them and looking at photos to get familiar with very minor details.''
