No lighting means users in limbo

Culling Park users remain in the dark after severe gales toppled a large rusted lighting pole at the Dunedin sports field last year.

The facility, used by the Dunedin City Royals football club and the Albion Cricket Club, was closed for a short time in September after five other lighting poles at the facility were found to be in poor condition, and were also removed because of the potential danger to the public.

The fields are owned by the Dunedin City Council, but the lighting poles are owned by the Royals.

Dunedin City Royals president Phil Collings said the council was doing a review of sports ground lighting around the city, and the club was waiting to see what eventuated, before considering its future at the ground.

"We’re going through a process with council.

"I’m not sure of the timeframes on that, but depending on the outcome of that, then we’ll move forward with whatever plan is required to see if we can get lights back at Culling Park."

In the meantime, the club would be without lights at the park for "the immediate future".

The club would train on other lit grounds around the city this season, Mr Collings said.
