Norovirus contained at Dunedin Hospital

No more patients or staff have become ill with suspected norovirus at Dunedin Hospital , but the orthopaedic ward remains closed.

The five patients from ward 3C found to have the illness on Monday were still ill with vomiting and/or diarrhoea, infection prevention and control charge nurse manager Jo Stodart said.

A staff member was also off work with the illness.

Bed shortages which coincided with the suspected norovirus outbreak eased yesterday, too.

Operations manager Megan Boivin said the hospital had moved from code black to code red, which meant it had up to 18 staffed beds free, instead of four or fewer.

Elective surgery is expected to be back to normal today.

Some surgery planned for yesterday was postponed but there were no delays caused by the lack of beds.
