Officer spat on after men cornered

A Dunedin officer was spat on after a police dog cornered two men early on Thursday.

A police dog unit stopped a vehicle being driven in a suspicious manner in Beresford St, St Clair shortly before 2am. The two male occupants, an 18-year-old and a 23-year-old, decided to run from the scene, Senior Sergeant Kelvin Lloyd said.

Both were detained, the older man receiving a dog bite, while the younger man allegedly spat on the officer, he said.

The teenager was found to have breached his bail, and was charged with assaulting police and resisting arrest.

Both men were also charged with drink-driving, the 18-year-old recording a breath-alcohol reading of 990mcg and the 23-year-old recording a level of 720mcg, after refusing to identify who was driving the vehicle.
