Old mortar shells found in North Dunedin

Police were called after the discovery of old mortar shells at a building site on Clyde St in North Dunedin this morning.

A police media spokeswoman said police were alerted shortly after 10.15am, and sought advice from the bomb squad.

The shells were found to be empty, and at this stage they had been deemed scrap metal, she said.

She was unable to comment on why they might have been in the building, but said they were "historic".
