One hurt in Saddle Hill house fire

One person was injured after a fire burned through the ceiling of a home in Saddle Hill near Dunedin last night.

A Fire and Emergency spokeswoman said a call was received at 9.30pm about a fire that had started in the ceiling of a large two-storey home on McMaster Rd.

Two appliances from Brighton and Lookout Pt attended, but on arrival called for two extra appliances from Roslyn and St Kilda and a tanker from Wakari, she said.

The spokeswoman said one occupant in the house was thought to have inhaled smoke and was taken to Dunedin Hospital.

The cause of the fire was unknown, but was not suspicious, and fire appliances began to leave the scene about 11pm.

There was substantial damage in the ceiling, however the house was not completely written off because of its size, the spokeswoman said.

A St John spokesman said one person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
