One a month trespassed from Dunedin's libraries

About one person a month is trespassed from Dunedin libraries, figures show.

While the vast majority of those orders were served for persistent physical and verbal abuse, there were a couple of more unusual scenarios which got patrons banned.

Since 2016, 57 trespass notices had been issued, Dunedin City Council confirmed.

Bernie Hawke stressed it was a tiny proportion in relation to the droves of citizens who used the library system legitimately.

"Ninety-nine percent of people who come through the library are very well behaved. It's a microscopic proportion of people who aren't," he said.

Among those trespassed for theft, intoxication and viewing pornography, one library user was barred in July 2017 for a "hair dye/flooding incident" and climbing on the roof of the building.

Three months later, someone else was evicted for pouring a can of energy drink down a lift shaft.

More worryingly, in October 2018, someone at the Mosgiel library inappropriately approached a young girl and tried to "entice her out of the building".

Mr Hawke acknowledged the role of librarian was at times challenging when dealing with at times unpredictable customers.
