A source, who declined to be named, told the Otago Daily Times more than 10 pupils were removed from the Dunedin hostel after the rugby match earlier this month.
The school’s rector, Richard Hall, confirmed pupils had been removed from the hostel, but declined to confirm how many were involved.
"The majority were year 13s in their last full week, with a small number of year 12s who were also in their last full week, as they were not returning in 2024."
He said the pupils broke the hostel’s rules regarding alcohol and that led to them leaving the hostel either voluntarily or after being required to by the school.
"Hostel rules are well known and incidents with alcohol and drugs are serious.
"Discipline consequences follow incidents."
The source told the ODT he was aware three boys had also been removed from the hostel later in the term for smoking marijuana.
The pupils had broken the rules and they deserved the consequences but the number of pupils breaking the rules was concerning, he said.
Mr Hall did not respond to questions about any incident involving pupils smoking marijuana.
He said the hostel had 22 staff, who all took "a very keen interest in the boys and their wellbeing".
Ministry of Education south team leader Nancy Bell said the ministry was aware of the incident following the rugby match.
"The school has policies and processes in place to respond to any incidents and we understand these have been worked through."
