Some of the memorable personalities who were part of a vibrant community at Otakou in 1840 were brought back to life in a theatrical performance at the Toitu Otago Settlers Museum yesterday.

The performance was a re-enactment of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi at Otakou on June 13, 1840.

More than 20 year 10 drama pupils from Kavanagh College performed while about 30 people, including other visiting school pupils, watched.

Among historical figures featured were Edward Weller, Octavius Harwood, Chief Karetai and Chief Te Matenga Taiaroa.

The drama presents a series of vignettes and stirring waiata, telling the story of life and conditions leading up to the Treaty signing.

Museum education officer Sara Sinclair said the latest original drama had been developed and performed thanks to ''amazing work'' by Kavanagh College's drama department.

This is the second year Kavanagh pupils have performed original drama as part of the museum's public programme and marking the 1840 signing.
