A contractor compacts gravel on the new Harbour Link shared cycle pathway beside the railway lines near the Ward St bridge.

A council spokesman said contractors were finishing work on the formed pathway, with additional safety features to follow.

The project was expected to be completed in February next year, the spokesman said.

The Harbour Link shared pathway would improve connections from the city to and around the harbour for people on bikes and foot.

It would create a link from St Andrew St, alongside the railway line, to the new Water of Leith bridge near the river mouth.

From there, the shared path continued along the western side of the harbour and finished at Port Chalmers.
