Former Dunedin photographer David Lloyd vividly remembers nearly falling from the belltower balcony in the Octagon while taking one of the historic photographs which features in the Otago Museum's Focal Point exhibition.

The photographic show celebrates "150 years of the Otago Daily Times", and since it opened last year, it has attracted more than 48,000 visits. It runs until June 17.

Mr Lloyd (81), who was a photographer at the ODT (1953-63), lives near Perth these days.

During a recent return to Dunedin, he visited the museum, and was impressed with a "magical" exhibition.

Among the many images on show is a front-page photograph of Dunedin dignitaries and members of the public standing outside the Dunedin Municipal Chambers, celebrating the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, on June 2, 1953.

In order to take the photograph, Mr Lloyd had climbed above the bells in the Municipal Chambers bell tower.

And he had been perched precariously, "jack-knifed" at the edge of a high balcony, camera held in one hand and the other other hand operating the shutter mechanism, with only his leg holding him back.

That was when he felt himself starting to slip, but quickly managed to consolidate his position before safely climbing down.

That year, he also took a lively photograph of Olympic gold medal-winning Dunedin long jumper Yvette Williams leaping at sand dunes near St Clair, an image also included in the show.

One of his brothers was the the late Tom Lloyd, a former ODT chief photographer, and another brother, Ken Lloyd (72), recently retired as a long-serving TVNZ contract cameraman.

After leaving the ODT, David Lloyd established the University of Otago's central photographic unit, before undertaking tertiary-level teaching in photography at Perth, from 1978.
