Physio pool expected to reopen next week

Dunedin Hospital's physiotherapy pool, closed as a result of vandalism, is expected to reopen next week.

Otago Therapeutic Pool Trust secretary-treasurer Neville Martin said June 17 was the estimated opening date, but if it could be opened sooner "we would certainly do so".

The tragedy had been that people who relied on using the pool for their general wellbeing were deprived of it for between two and three weeks, he said.

Because glass from smashed windows had fallen in the pool, it had to be drained, cleaned and refilled.

The water had to be cooled before going into the sewerage system, and then when the pool was refilled it took some time to heat up to its operating temperature of 35degC.

Mr Martin said the trust and hospital management would be reviewing security to see if further improvement was required.

Southern District Health Board facilities and site development manager Warren Taylor said the cost of replacing the glass and some extra work for staff was about $650.

Lighting in the car park had been improved recently.

The Castle St pool is open to the public and used both for recreation and by those undergoing therapy for medical conditions.

It is owned and maintained by the board but run by the trust.
