Pig-shooting spurs protest

Several animal rights protesters held a vigil outside a University of Otago building yesterday, to draw attention to the plight of animals used for research.

Dunedin Animal Rights Collective member Carl Scott said the protest was a response to news last week about experiments on pigs at the university.

‘‘We've known about some of the stuff that goes on [at Otago] for a long time, but we were especially shocked when last week we found out about what was happening with pigs back in 2009,'' Mr Scott said.

The pigs were shot in the head, while sedated, to study blood-spatter patterns.

A university spokesman said ‘‘the university respects the right of people to express their views in a peaceful manner''.
