Esme Thompson (2), of Dunedin, cranes her head and tries to get closer to the magic while visiting the Pixie Town display at the Toitu Otago Settlers Museum this week.

The many mechanised pixie figures on display in the show, which runs until January 4, are a drawcard for young and old.

''It's very different from what you [usually] see nowadays,'' Museum spokesman Kim Conroy said.

Eleanor Leckie, an Otago Settlers Association committee member, and a volunteer at the Pixie Town exhibition, said part of the show's appeal was the wealth of intriguing detail in the mechanical figures and their environments.

''The detail is tremendous,'' she said.

The exhibition features popular mechanical ''pixies'' built by Nelson man Fred Jones and displayed at the former Dunedin DIC department store until it closed in the late 1980s.
