Plan to enhance cemetery

An information kiosk, sign, landscaping, and gates will be investigated as improvement options for the East Taieri Cemetery.

Development ideas were called for last year after a suggestion was made to the Mosgiel Taieri Community Board that the cemetery be reopened.

It was closed to burials in 2005 but it was thought adjacent land, owned by the New Zealand Transport Agency, could be purchased for expansion.

The board had access to a fund of about $28,000 for improvements to the cemetery, but Dunedin City Council investigations revealed that would not cover the cost of the land, which had a rateable value of $241,000, nor cover the costs of necessary consents and development.

The public was invited to share their ideas of how the money should be spent to improve the cemetery.

Council botanic garden and cemeteries team leader Alan Matchett said the Taieri Ministers' Association suggested the construction of an on-site information kiosk to assist people in locating burial plots and orientation in and around the cemetery.

The concept was for a covered structure, large enough to shelter about three people, with information display panels including a map, a list of those buried there, and history of the cemetery.

"I think it's a good idea, both personally and professionally, it will be useful," Mr Matchett said.

The community board expressed similar feelings about it during a meeting this week.

The cost of such structures ranged from $3000 to $25,000, depending on such things as size, design and landscaping.

Other suggestions included creating a sign, carrying out landscape plantings, and hanging new gates at the existing entranceway.

All options would be investigated and priced, with a report going back to the community board at its next meeting in March.
