Planning day successful

Those with a common interest in looking after and managing their wetlands had a successful day planning for the future at a workshop this week on weeds and plant restoration at Waihola.

Lake Waihola Waipori Wetland Society held the workshop at Waihola Hall.

About 45 landowners, Sinclair Wetland Trust members and representatives from the Otago Regional Council, Department of Conservation, Clutha District Council, forestry and the Fish and Game Council, attended.

The aim was to begin discussions on how to best achieve long-term cohesive management of weeds, especially glyceria (reed sweet grass) and willows in the wetlands.

Regional council land information officer Nicola McGrouther said participants developed a common vision for issues such as weed management.

The community wanted action and everyone was keen to work together and see the project move forward, she said.

"It's just the start of the process and a key issues document will come out of this and then we'll start work towards a management strategy."
