Police pepper-spray driver

A Dunedin man is in custody following a police pursuit early on Saturday, which culminated in him being pepper-sprayed.

Tamati Rangiwahia Ellison (23), labourer, faces four charges in relation to the incident, of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to stop for police and refusing to permit a blood specimen to be taken.

Ellison (not the Highlanders midfield back Tamati Ellison) appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Saturday morning and was remanded by consent to Tuesday.

Pleas had not yet been taken.

Ellison faces other unrelated charges, for which he is due to appear in court in May.

Senior Sergeant Tania Baron said the driver of a vehicle failed to stop for police officers when required on East Ave in St Kilda about 3.30am on Saturday.

Police pursued the vehicle for a few minutes to Doon St, Waverley, where the driver was pepper-sprayed and arrested.

He was the sole occupant and owner of the vehicle.

The driver was kept in police custody until his 9.30am court appearance.
