Police warning over fireworks' misuse

Anyone found to be misusing fireworks will be held accountable, Dunedin police warn.

Already two incidents involving the misuse of fireworks were being investigated by Dunedin police ahead of tonight's Guy Fawkes celebrations.

Sergeant Ben Butterfield said dry vegetation along State Highway 87 was set alight by the occupants of a van as they let off fireworks from the vehicle between Mosgiel and Outram on Sunday evening.

Emergency services were called to the fire at 8.30pm, he said.

The blaze did not cause any major damage, although it illustrated the potential danger of fireworks, Sgt Butterfield said.

''We encourage people to use fireworks responsibly, as they have the potential to cause injuries and property damage. Misuse of fireworks can lead to people being charged and police take the misuse of fireworks seriously, so should we find people misusing them they will be held accountable for their actions,'' he said.

Those responsible for the fire had yet to be identified and police inquiries were continuing, Sgt Butterfield said.

On Saturday night, Dunedin police were called several times to a Beresford St house party where a hedge was set alight by fireworks, following earlier complaints by nearby residents about the use of fireworks.

Two Dunedin men were charged with disorder-related offences in relation to the incident.
