The South Dunedin Community Pop-Up will officially open its doors to the public this Friday.

The temporary facility, at Cargill's Hall (199 Hillside Rd) will be open 25 hours a week, from Tuesday to Saturday, and will house community activities, meetings, a Dunedin City Council service centre and a library.

It will also provide free gigabit Wi-Fi and internet access, a weekly JP service and a community ``hot desk'' where members of community groups can be based for up to two weeks at a time, to promote awareness of their services.

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull said the opening was a significant milestone in the city's relationship with the South Dunedin community.

He said it would also provide a focal point for the community to provide feedback and input into the development of the permanent ``South Dunedin Community Hub''.

``It is intended that the pop-up facility will remain in place for about two years during the development of the permanent hub.''

Members of the public are invited to attend the formal opening at 11.30am on Friday.
