Power out for homes in Otago

Severe weather has caused power outages on the Aurora Energy network in Dunedin, Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes.

A spokesman said about 60 customers were without power in Dunedin late on Saturday afternoon. He said 19 customers in Green Island had been without power since last night.

Line crews attended the fault at the time, but could not carry out repairs because the weather made it unsafe. They were back this morning to make repairs where possible.

Thirty-seven customers remained without power in Leith Valley Road as land slips are hampering access. Repair crews were in the area with civil contractors to assess the situation.

Power has been turned off to 21 properties in Otokia and Mclaren Gully Roads in Henley for safety. The area is inaccessible due to severe flooding.

However, power had been restored to all affected customers in Allanton and Momona, except in Bruce Rd, Momona.

Repair crews were on site and power was expected to be restored by about 5pm.

Power was restored to all affected customers in Old Brighton Rd, Green Island at 1pm on Saturday.

One customer in Blanket Bay remained without power as land slips were hampering access. Repair crews were assessing the situation.

Power had been restored to all 40 affected customers on Bush Rd in Green Island.

Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes

Power had been restored to customers in the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes region affected by storm conditions.

All power has been restored to customers in the Fruitlands and Millers Flat area except one, where crews were unable to get to due to heavy snow.

All power had been restored to customers in Cardrona Valley after a tree downed a powerline.

The Aurora spokesman said the severe weather appeared to be slowly improving, but customers should still be ready for the possibility of unplanned power outages.

People should be prepared for the possibility of electricity-related hazards and unplanned power outages, in particular:

• Always keep well clear of fallen power lines or damaged electrical equipment and treat them as live at all times

• Watch out for falling tree branches as these can cause damage to power lines

• If a power outage occurs, switch appliances off at the wall to avoid possible damage to electrical appliances when power is restored. Be prepared for power outages.

• Make sure you have adequate food supplies, warm clothing and bedding, torch and spare batteries, battery radio and an alternative source of heating and cooking.
