Principal granted study award

Finding better ways to curb unruly behaviour on school grounds will be the topic of a study by Tahuna Intermediate principal Tony Hunter after he won an Otago Primary Principals' Association study award.

The Tahuna Intermediate principal was awarded an $8000 scholarship during the OPPA's annual general meeting in Dunedin yesterday, and hopes to use it to study behaviour management programmes in schools in British Columbia, Canada.

"The way that they handle suspensions and stand-downs is different from the way they do it here in New Zealand," Mr Hunter said.

"They do it within the school. Rather than sending the kids home, they are put into a programme which aims to modify their behaviour. It works very well, and clusters of schools can work together to do it together."

Mr Hunter hoped his study could eventually benefit Dunedin schools.
