King’s High School pupils show good social distancing at the school’s senior prizegiving ceremony at the Regent Theatre last night.

It was the only high school to hold its prizegiving in the theatre this year and several control measures were in place to manage the Covid-19 risk .

Traditionally, a whole-school affair, this year only those boys being awarded prizes were eligible to attend.

Staff, pupils and parents of prize-winning boys were all masked and seated in different parts of the auditorium, and empty seats separated groups to ensure social distancing was observed.

The ceremony was also streamed online.

Year 9 dean Sam Fielding said the school had worked in conjunction with both the Ministry of Education and staff from the Regent Theatre to ensure the event could go ahead in a safe manner that met all the Covid-19 Alert Level 2 requirements.

Prizegiving was the proudest night the school had, and pupils had been ‘‘buzzing’’ ahead of the evening, he said.
