English will be Larissa Hinds' second language for the next few weeks as she prepares to travel to France for the Allons en France international conference in Paris.

The 17-year-old Bayfield High School pupil won the all-expenses-paid, 10-day trip after winning the New Zealand Alliance Francaise Federation Concours Oral (speech competition).

It will be the first time a pupil from New Zealand has attended the conference.

"It will be my first big overseas experience. But it won't be lonely.

"There will be 120 other participants from 90 different countries at the event."

Funded by the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, and Air France, the trip in July will allow Larissa to combine two of her passions in life.

"French is my favourite subject, and the great thing is I get to discuss my favourite topic with it - human rights.

"Human rights in the 21st century is the theme of the conference," she said.

"I'm very excited. It's such a great opportunity."

As well as debating in French, Larissa will have an opportunity to attend seminars, make presentations, visit Parisian landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, and experience the people and culture of France.

She hopes to get the opportunity to taste frogs' legs.

" I've tried tinned snails before.

"They were cold and rather rubbery, but it was all part of the French experience.

"Frog legs couldn't be any worse than the snails."

In the meantime, Larissa will be using French in conversation every chance she gets, before departing for Paris on July 6.
