As the London Olympics gradually wind down for another four years, Rotary Park School pupils wait with open arms for Dunedin's Olympic gold medalist to return home.

Former Rotary Park School pupil Hamish Bond and teammate Eric Murray took 6 seconds off the world record in their heat for the men's coxless pair, and went on to win the gold medal in London last week.

Pupils at his former school hope he will visit on his return, to belatedly celebrate his success at the school, before it is closed at the end of this year.

Acting principal Jan Stevens said Bond was a pupil at the school in the early 1990s, and his participation at the Games had provided present pupils with an excellent learning focus.

He was a great role model and showed pupils what could be achieved with courage, commitment and dedication, she said.

Earlier this week, the school celebrated Bond's win by giving each pupil an Olympic Games pin, which they have been wearing with pride ever since.

The Games will be officially closed on Monday morning, New Zealand time.
