Lexie and Lloyd are Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind guide dog puppies-in-training who arrived in the city in August.
They are 14 weeks old today and now that they are fully vaccinated, can go to public places where other dogs may have been.
Lloyd's puppy walker, Richard Hodson, said a trip to the Otago Farmers Market on Saturday was the first time the pup had been in such a crowded situation, but had responded well.
"They are both calm - they are both developing well," he said.
However, today's lessons in the Meridian mall will be "more difficult" because of the heights, shiny surfaces, escalators, lifts and stairs.
South Island region guide dog mobility instructor Mike Prisk said training puppies was all about getting them used to the wide range of situations they could encounter with a blind person.
"At the end of the process, we really just want a sound and relaxed puppy," he said.
He believed both Lexie and Lloyd were progressing well and were "fairly sound".
The foundation will celebrate 120 years of service during Blind Week from October 26.
