Relay raises $46,500

More than 1000 people raised more than $46,500 for the Cancer Society by running a circuit on the University of Otago Union Lawn in Dunedin between 8pm Friday and 9am Saturday.

''Cancer Core'' president Katy Atkinson said it started drizzling at 10pm on Friday night, which turned to heavy rain at 5am on Saturday, but the ''resilient'' people were not deterred.

''It was amazing.''

The inaugural University of Otago Relay for Life had teams of 10 or more participants complete a relay-style walk or run over 12 to 24 hours, she said.

''It will happen again.''
