Dunedin and Clutha residents may see thunderstorms and heavy rain later today.
As temperatures gradually warm and low levels of instability persist across eastern Otago and Southland.
A MetService spokesman said there was a low risk that showers could be become thundery across much of eastern Southland and eastern Otago.
There was an increased risk in Dunedin and Clutha, where any thunderstorms that do develop were expected to generate localised heavy rain of 10mm to 20mm per hour, he said.
