Road to be renamed during Cricket World Cup

Logan Park Drive, the road to the University Oval in Dunedin, will be temporarily renamed Brendon McCullum Dr for the duration of the Cricket World Cup.

The majority of Dunedin city councillors agreed with the suggestion from Cr Hilary Calvert proposed under urgency during Friday's pre-draft long-term plan discussions.

It seemed an appropriate way to recognise a ''son of Dunedin'', considering Wellington had recently given McCullum the symbolic keys to that city, Cr Calvert said.

A previous proposal from Cr Calvert to have the road in Logan Park, home to the city's main cricket fields, permanently renamed Brendan McCullum Drive is still being considered.

Some councillors expressed concern about ''rushing through'' the temporary name change, but it was supported on a majority vote.

Council staff said the cost would be minimal, largely limited to erecting a temporary road sign.
