Police are urging road users to make themselves more visible after several near misses as darkness falls earlier.
Motorists, cyclists and runners were all being advised to make themselves seen when out on the roads, especially during mornings and early evenings.
Senior Sergeant Al Dickie, of Mosgiel, said motorists were unintentionally driving around in the evenings without headlights on.
‘‘There's potential for someone to be seriously injured or killed,'' Snr Sgt Dickie said.
‘‘I've had to flash my lights to get people to turn their lights on.''
Cyclists and runners needed to wear high-visibility clothing and use lights and reflectors.
‘‘They need to be mindful of just how hard it is for motorists to see them,'' he said.
Senior Sergeant Liz Waru, of Dunedin, said it was likely there had been ‘‘near misses'' because of people's lack of visibility.
‘‘As we're entering the colder months, it's getting a bit darker.
‘‘People need to be more visible on the road,'' she said.
