Two balaclava-wearing men seen jumping from roof to roof in Dunedin's central city sparked an armed response from police.

Police are appealing for witnesses to yesterday's incident, in George and Hanover Sts, about 5pm, Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Dunedin, said.

The pair, described as wearing black balaclavas, were believed to be Caucasian. One wore a green short sleeve top and brown pants, the other a grey hoodie and dark pants.

A police dog tracked the men from an alleyway behind SBS Bank in George St along several Hanover St buildings before ending up at the rear of the University of Otago Adams Building.

The men were ''possibly targeting'' the microbiology department, he said.

''[But] we can't rule it out being a prank ...''

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dunedin police on 471-4800, or on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
