Inspiration from a Taieri Times article about the Big Rock Protect Our Penguins Group's efforts to save blue penguins from dog attacks led a group of Outram School pupils to brainstorm ways they could help the group safeguard the birds as part of their technology curriculum studies and school challenge to contribute to the community.

Teacher Clemency Wright said the pupils and their parents had got behind the cause and organised a fun run, which was held recently.

The pupils held a baking day to prepare food to sustain them on their laps around the school and rugby field.

They initially aimed to raise more than $200, to enable the group to buy plants to disguise the penguins's nesting boxes.

However, at last count the children had raised more than $1000. The pupils plan to help the group plant the flaxes next year.
