"You can't cut hedges in weather like this."
Mr Sue was one of about 11 anglers at Steamer Basin who braved the rain for the love of catching a big silver fish.
You had to come prepared for any weather when you wanted a salmon, he said, swathed in a head-to-toe yellow waterproof ensemble.
Mr Sue said the turnout yesterday was much lower than other days so far this season, when up to 40 people could be seen with their lines and baited hooks out from wharves around the inner harbour.
Some of the anglers would arrive as early as 4am and spend all day on the wharf, while others, like Mr Sue yesterday, would pop in when they could spare a few hours.
Even though there were good conditions for the fish yesterday, there were few bites and no fish caught by 10am.
Fishermen had caught about nine fish by the same time on Monday.
But there was always a great spirit of camaraderie among anglers when someone hooked a fish.
Anglers hoped for a good season, Mr Sue said.
"It's started off pretty good so far."
