Despite a sell-out run at Dunedin Fringe Festival last year, slow tickets sales still makes Scottish stand-up comic Bruce Fummey nervous.

A Dunedin audience delays buying a ticket until the last minute, he said.

"They wait, don't they. They like to keep you on tenterhooks and for your bum to be squeaking, waiting to see if anyone is going to turn up, but eventually they do.''

Fummey will perform in the Fortune Theatre Studio with Scottish comedian Vladimir McTavish Best of Scottish Comedy II .

"It's a mixture of political comment, observational humour, personal anecdotes and filth,'' McTavish said.

The successful recipe at the festival last year sold out their two-night run.

McTavish enjoyed Dunedin because of its similarities to his home town, Edinburgh.

"It's bizarre walking around this city, where every street is same as back home.''

Fummey lives in Blackford, a village near Perth, and loves New Zealand, especially the South.

"Until last year, I thought Scotland was the most beautiful country in the world, and then drove from Queenstown to Dunedin and thought 'no, it's the second most beautiful country.

"I also thought the Scots had the most annoying neighbours in the world and then we went to Australia.''

Vladimir said he was a staunch fan of the Dunedin Fringe Festival but kept it a secret.

"I couldn't recommend it highly enough but I wouldn't want to, because the more people [performers] that come, the harder it is to sell tickets.''

"Stay away,'' Fummey warned other artists, laughing.

Last year, the comics' wives accompanied them to Dunedin but this year they stayed home, Fummey said.

"Every day, I send her photographs home and she is so jealous. We need to sell enough tickets this year so my wife can come again next year.''

● The comedy Best of Scottish Comedy II is on tonight at Fortune Theatre Studio and ends tomorrow.
