When Dunedin firefighter Bevan Moreton was on his way to a fire callout in Victoria Rd early on Sunday, he was hoping it was someone else's house.

Unfortunately, it wasn't.

It was his beloved Ocean Beach Scout Group hall - his second home - where he is a scout leader and role model for South Dunedin youths.

"It was a bit like watching your own place burn down, in some ways."

Yesterday, he and many of his young scouting enthusiasts set to, to clean up and count the cost of the suspicious fire which damaged about 25% of the hall.

The incident has left the scout group members bewildered and angry, particularly patrol leader William Smaill (13).

"It's just horrible.

"I can't believe the bad luck we've had lately."

"William said the group hall was robbed last Christmas and about $2000 worth of gear taken.

"And now this . . .

"It sucks.

"I hope the people who lit the fire feel good about what they've done."

Fire Safety investigators are treating the fire as arson.

It was deliberately lit in the kitchen area of the hall and damaged about $50,000 worth of camping equipment.

Mr Moreton estimated the total damage to the building was about $150,000 and was glad the facility was insured.

The group's activities would be disrupted for several weeks while the building was repaired, but he hoped an alternative venue could be found before the next school term started in October.
