SDHB doctors' strike curtails appointments

About 230 appointments were deferred because of the second resident doctors' strike, the Southern District Health Board says.

The strike ends at 8am today after junior doctors who are members of the New Zealand Resident Doctors' Association walked off the job for 48 hours.

A third strike is scheduled for February 12 and 13.

SDHB chief executive Chris Fleming could not be specific about the number of rescheduled, or not booked appointments, but said it would be about 230, at both Dunedin and Southland hospitals.

''We are trying to minimise the impact on patients, particularly those scheduled for surgery.''

Senior doctors, including chief medical officer Nigel Millar, had covered some shifts, as had non RDA doctors and union members required to work due to patient safety requirements.

''Staff are once again doing an outstanding job of focusing on urgent and acute care, and as much as possible, it is business as usual,'' Mr Fleming said.

He called the strike unfortunate and said it had been disruptive to providing healthcare services.

''We appreciate the patience and understanding of those whose care has been disrupted.

''We are hopeful that more mediation will take place next week and the parties are able to come to a satisfactory agreement.''
