Police, family and friends and Land Search and Rescue volunteers (LandSAR) scoured ‘‘areas of interest'' yesterday as the hunt for a missing Dunedin man continues.

Police inquiries have revealed 52-year-old Stephen Gourlay was last seen walking south in Kaikorai Valley Rd near Bowl Line about 8am on December 20, after being dropped off by a friend.

He was wearing a black hoodie, blue shorts and brown work boots and was carrying a black backpack.

Police had earlier stated the last confirmed sighting of Mr Gourlay was in the Ravensbourne area on December 19.

Senior Sergeant Ian Temple, of Dunedin, said the search areas included near Mr Gourlay's Athol Pl, Ravensbourne, home and the Electrix work yard in Halfway Bush, where he is employed.

The search was not prompted by a lead or tip-off, he said.

‘‘He's missing; it was an avenue that needed to be explored.''

Dunedin LandSAR committee chairman Dave Robertson said the search crew had spent time yesterday looking through bush areas around mountain biking tracks on the slopes of Signal Hill, above Ravensbourne.

The search was made to reassure family and friends and was not prompted by any specific event, Mr Robertson said.

Mr Gourlay was described by family as Caucasian, about 173cm tall, of a slight build and with a slightly lazy eye, short grey hair and a sleeve tattoo on his forearm.

He had previously been described as having grey facial hair but was clean-shaven when he was last seen, police said.

Anyone with information which could assist police was asked either to contact Constable Shelley Phair, of Dunedin, by telephoning on (03) 471-4800 or they could call anonymously via the Crimestoppers service on 0800 555-111.
